All with free shipping within the EU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The runner-up will win a Raspberry Pi 5 with free shipping within the EU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So be sure to send in your ideas \u2013 you can comment below!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now that we&#8217;ve covered that, let&#8217;s get into the speed of Micro SD cards with Raspberry Pi 5.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Raspberry Pi 5 Micro SD Card Speed<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>First things first. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With Raspberry Pi 5, the SD card interface is still run through the Broadcom chip. Despite the presence of the new RP1 (which we&#8217;ve discussed already <a href=\"https:\/\/picockpit.com\/raspberry-pi\/a-first-look-at-raspberry-pi-5\/\">here<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/picockpit.com\/raspberry-pi\/5-surprising-features-of-raspberry-pi-5\/\">here<\/a>), the SD card interface goes through the BCM2712.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Eben Upton, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.raspberrypi.com\/news\/introducing-raspberry-pi-5\/\">this is primarily due to the board layout<\/a>. Perhaps then, in the future, they will route the SD card interface differently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The SDR104, which stands for Single Data Rate 104, standard operates at a frequency of 208 MHz and supports a bus speed of up to 104 MB\/s (Megabytes per second) for read speeds. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>SDR104 corresponds to UHS-1, if that&#8217;s what you&#8217;re more familiar with.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;UHS&#8221; stands for Ultra High-Speed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, UHS-1 isn&#8217;t the fastest you can get these days. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With UHS-1, you can get at least 10 MB\/s of write speed and with UHS-3, you can get at least 30 MB\/s of write speed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, if you see a number &#8211; 1 or 3 &#8211; inside a U on your micro SD card, SDR104 corresponds to the 1.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What a UHS-1 micro SD card can get is at least 10 MB\/s of write speed and up to 104 MB\/s of read speed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And although this isn&#8217;t the fastest, it&#8217;s still much faster than the rates on Raspberry Pi 4.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jeff Geerling posted the following graphic on his blog:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"645\" height=\"172\" src=\"https:\/\/picockpit.com\/raspberry-pi\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/image-3.png\" alt=\"Jeff Geerling's micro SD card read benchmark stats\" class=\"wp-image-5522\" srcset=\"https:\/\/picockpit.com\/raspberry-pi\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/image-3.png 645w, https:\/\/picockpit.com\/raspberry-pi\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/image-3-300x80.png 300w, https:\/\/picockpit.com\/raspberry-pi\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/image-3-18x5.png 18w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 645px) 100vw, 645px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Credit: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jeffgeerling.com\/blog\/2023\/testing-pcie-on-raspberry-pi-5\">Jeff Geerling<\/a>.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But what does this mean then? Essentially, the new Raspberry Pi model supports faster data transfer speeds between the SD card and the Raspberry Pi board. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This results in quicker access to data stored on the SD card. That means that choosing what you buy is extra important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are our thoughts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We highly recommend SanDisk and Samsung, as both are market leaders in SD cards and we have had extremely positive experiences with both. They are reliable and high-quality.
