Figuratively and literally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As I&#8217;ve elaborated before, I&#8217;m a bit of a case nerd when it comes to single board computers. While I&#8217;ve used a lot of official Raspberry Pi cases, my favorite cases are actually <a href=\"https:\/\/buyzero.de\/products\/flirc-gehause-fur-raspberry-pi-4\">the Argon ONE case<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/buyzero.de\/products\/flirc-gehause-fur-raspberry-pi-4\">the FLIRC case<\/a> for Raspberry Pi 4.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And I&#8217;m excited to see what third-party companies are going to come up with. If the Argon ONE case really pushed the functionality of Raspberry Pi 4, then I&#8217;m itching to see what they&#8217;ll manage with Raspberry Pi 5.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, this time, it seems that Raspberry Pi has really gone above and beyond with their new case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.raspberrypi.com\/news\/designing-the-perfect-case-and-cooling-for-raspberry-pi-5\/\">Roughly a week ago<\/a>, Raspberry Pi Ltd. released a video &#8211; a discussion between Eben Upton, John Cowan-Hughes, and Gordon Hollingworth. In the discussion, they discuss the details and considerations that went into the design.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, I though it would be worthwhile to dive into some of their points. What I want to do here is draw your attention to 4 of the key takeaways from the discussion. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course, the conversation is worth watching in its entirety, and you can check out the video here:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" hcb-fetch-image-from=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=YgtdYf3qegA&amp;t=1805s\" title=\"Designing a bespoke case and cooling for Raspberry Pi 5\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/YgtdYf3qegA?start=1805&#038;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Admittedly, I haven&#8217;t gotten my hands on an official case yet, but it seems that Raspberry Pi Ltd. has really listened to the community on this one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So here are 4 facts about the Raspberry Pi 5 case!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">#1: You&#8217;ll be able to mount HATs above the fan. And the PoE+ HAT fits inside.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the standout features of the new case is the ability to mount HATs (Hardware Attached on Top) above the fan. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In case you&#8217;re not a HAT nut, HATs are essentially add-ons that expand the capabilities of Raspberry Pi boards. And the ability to mount HATs above the fan on the case sets it apart from its predecessors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In comparison to previous models, you&#8217;ll actually be able to keep your Pi 5 encased while running a HAT.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This means that HATs won&#8217;t get in the way of cooling solutions for the Pi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But while some or most HATs will be mounted on top, there&#8217;s one clear exception to the rule: namely, the PoE+ HAT. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.raspberrypi.com\/news\/designing-the-poe-hat-for-raspberry-pi-5-compact-efficient-power-and-networking\/\">The PoE+ HAT for Raspberry Pi 5 will actually fit inside the case<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Previous PoE+ HATs had a fan built in. For example, here&#8217;s what <a href=\"https:\/\/buyzero.de\/products\/raspberry-pi-poe-plus-hat\">the PoE+ HAT<\/a> looked like for Raspberry Pi 3B+ and for Raspberry Pi 4:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/buyzero.de\/products\/raspberry-pi-poe-plus-hat\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"401\" height=\"269\" src=\"https:\/\/picockpit.com\/raspberry-pi\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/image-66.png\" alt=\"The PoE+ HAT for Raspberry Pi 3B+ and Raspberry Pi 4\" class=\"wp-image-5780\" srcset=\"https:\/\/picockpit.com\/raspberry-pi\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/image-66.png 401w, https:\/\/picockpit.com\/raspberry-pi\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/image-66-300x201.png 300w, https:\/\/picockpit.com\/raspberry-pi\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/image-66-18x12.png 18w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 401px) 100vw, 401px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With the new PoE+ HAT, there isn&#8217;t a fan built-in. Instead, it has a much more compact L-shape. So, you&#8217;ll be able to fit it inside the official case along with its fan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And, on top of this, you&#8217;ll be able to fit <a href=\"https:\/\/picockpit.com\/raspberry-pi\/raspberry-pi-5-has-a-real-time-clock-so-what\/\">the RTC battery<\/a> inside as well!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">#2: They&#8217;re stackable!<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you&#8217;ve grown accustomed to the previous cases, then probably one of the first things you noticed about the Raspberry Pi 5 case are the vents at the bottom piece.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"615\" height=\"542\" src=\"https:\/\/picockpit.com\/raspberry-pi\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/image-67.png\" alt=\"Raspberry Pi 5 case\" class=\"wp-image-5781\" style=\"aspect-ratio:1.1346863468634687;width:372px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/picockpit.com\/raspberry-pi\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/image-67.png 615w, https:\/\/picockpit.com\/raspberry-pi\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/image-67-300x264.png 300w, https:\/\/picockpit.com\/raspberry-pi\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/image-67-14x12.png 14w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 615px) 100vw, 615px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is not only much better for ventilation than previous variants. It&#8217;s also important for one of my favorite new features: they&#8217;re are stackable!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All you have to do is remove the top piece so that they sit flush with one another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The stackable nature of the new case is great if you&#8217;re planning on building <a href=\"https:\/\/www.raspberrypi.com\/tutorials\/cluster-raspberry-pi-tutorial\/\">Pi clusters<\/a>, for example. You won&#8217;t need to get a specific <a href=\"https:\/\/buyzero.de\/products\/makercase-tower-8xacryl-platte-mit-abstandhalter-joy-it?_pos=2&amp;_sid=d2c63d894&amp;_ss=r\">cluster case<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead, you could just stack a bunch of official cases on top of each other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">#3: The Active Cooler fits inside too.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Active Cooler serves as an alternative to the fan. If you want the Active Cooler instead of the fan, then I have good news. Indeed, 50,000 hours corresponds to roughly 5.7 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And, as Eben Upton stresses, that&#8217;s 50,000 hours <em>of use<\/em>.
