Raspberry Pi stock update 2022 (with delivery timelines)

Everyone is rightfully clamoring about Raspberry Pi stock. So we felt it time to give an update with delivery timelines.

PiCockpit is a property of pi3g, which also has buyzero.de, an Approved Reseller of the Raspberry Pi.

Here’s how stock for various Raspberry Pis will look for this year.

Raspberry Pi 4 availability in 2022: your best bet

The Raspberry Pi 4 and the Compute Module 4 are still your best bet.

They continue to be in short supply until the end of this year, but we are able to support our end customers and industrial customers with stock continuing to come in.

For Compute Module 4 volume orders, you should plan for delivery in September or later, depending on the volume of order.

Update 10.10.2022 (Pi 4)

The situation for the end of this year looks worse than anticipated!

  • No Pi 4 / 8 GB at all until the end of this year (as per the current plan)
  • Less Pi 4 / 4 GB availability than anticipated!

We will use our limited Pi 4 / 4 GB supply to allocate against our PiCockpit backorder reservations within the EU. It’s free for you to join the list, and we allocate in order of the reservations! Thus, there is no need to rush, when your reservation becomes available – you will have a full week to check out out our sister store buyzero.de and purchase the Pi.

Let’s see what the next year will bring!

Attention Industrial customers: please reach out to us, so we can discuss your demand with Raspberry Pi & try to work with you to support you in your demand. Also if you need other models (e.g. Compute Module 4 / Pi 3B / Pi 3B+, Pi Zero W, etc.). We will be able to also give you some guidance and design-in advice.

Update 16.8.2022

There is now only one licensee partner (Farnell), who next to Raspberry Pi themselves has Raspberry Pi boards manufactured at the Sony factory. I have received a forecast from Farnell for the remainder of this year, which therefore mirrors the entire market situation on Pi 4 / 4 GB and Pi 4 / 8 GB.

  • August 2022:
    • very small quantity being delivered to us (both Pi 4 / 4 GB and Pi 4 / 8 GB)
  • September 2022:
    • very small quantity of Pi 4 / 4 GB being delivered,
    • no Pi 4 / 8 GB.
  • October 2022:
    • no Pi 4 / 4 GB in October for the EMEA region (Europe, Middle East, Africa).
    • APAC + Americas will probably get some Pi 4 / 4 GB in this period (expect very small quantities).
    • No Pi 4 / 8 GB.
  • November 2022:
    • very very small quantity of Pi 4 / 4 GB – possibly we might get nothing that month.
    • small quantity of Pi 4 / 8 GB
  • December 2022:
    • small quantity of Pi 4 / 4 GB
    • no Pi 4 / 8 GB for no one

Currently there is no visibility beyond December 2022. Keep in mind, the volumes which we are expecting are very small, unfortunately.

Raspberry Pi Reservation Tool: a fair queue to get a Pi 4/4 GB or Pi 4 / 8GB!

Do you know the problem of having to rush to buy a Pi, when stock becomes available, and still not getting lucky? We’ve designed a reservation tool right here into PiCockpit. This way, you’re in a fair queue – and will get a full week to buy a Pi at our shop once it’s allocated to you, without having to rush. Available only in Europe + Switzerland currently.

Read more about the Reservation Tool and how it can help you to get a Raspberry Pi without rushing.

P.S: Currently this Reservation Tool is an insider tip – we should be able to allocate the entire current back queue on Pi 4 / 8 GB completely this week (as of 16.8.2022)!

Raspberry Pi 3 availability in 2022: diminishing

We will get less Raspberry Pi 3 boards through the coming months of 2022.

However, if you are an industrial customer and you have a Pi 3-based design and can’t transition to the Raspberry Pi 4, you can get in touch with us to discuss your options.

Update 16.8.2022:

The situation on the Pi 3 series is improving slowly again towards the end of the year. Contact us if you are an industrial customer in Europe and need support with Pi 3 / 3B+.

Raspberry Pi Zero series availability: most difficult to get in 2022

The Pi Zero series is, however, the one which is the most difficult to get this year.

If you are planning to do a design based on the Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W, you should anticipate to get stock for volume requirements only in 2023.

We have switched to supporting customers only for sampling purposes.

Avoid scalpers

As a member of Raspberry Pi’s Approved Reseller network, pi3g sells Raspberry Pis at an accessible and affordable price.

Scalpers have taken extreme measures to take advantage of the shortage. Prices of the Raspberry Pis have gone through the roof as a result.

pi3g is doing its best to identify scalpers and cancel their orders.

It’s in the best interest of the Raspberry Pi community to avoid buying Raspberry Pis at inflated prices. Every time people buy from the scalpers, it gives them an incentive to buy from official sources, turn around and list it at an inflated price.

By choosing not to buy from them, we can discourage this practice.

Got a project and need advice?

Despite the shortages, pi3g has deep technical knowledge and we can help you discuss your Raspberry Pi project requirements and support you with stock and information. We can help you find alternatives and solutions based on what we have.

Can you supply me with just 10 (or less) of these Pi 4 modules which I desperately need for development?

      Hi Jonah,

unfortunately we’re out of stock on Zero boards for a long time to come 🙁
If a Pi 4 works, you probably should be in a better position.

Let us know on our support form if you want us to reach out if we get stock:

What is the problem with production?
If supply chain issues, why is this still an issue?

    Thanks!

The Problem seems to be a bit more complex than some might think.

Chip supply for years has been a race to less nano meters production where every year they build a new factory that could build smaller chips. Intel, Amd and ARM sold the old equipment down the line when they got a new production line set up that would produce smaller chips.

unfortunately they hit the physical limit for smaller chips some years ago (or rather the economical) the now smaller chips(2nm I think) are much more expensive to produce. Therefore everyone stays with the previous 4nm ones which are cheaper. The demand for the newest and fastest chips dropped due to increased cost and lower lifetime and less improvements.

The demand for hardware also skyrocketed with corona since suddenly many companies needed hardware for home office and stuff.

The demand didn’t really drop since then. The factories that were build due to increased demand should be finished about 2025. Until then there will probably an ongoing chip shortage.

        Interesting comments, thanks Johanno.

I believe the Raspberry Pi uses the 28nm and 40nm silicon, with the Pi 4/400/CM4 using the 28nm and the Zero 2 and Pi 3 using the 40nm.

As for your estimation of 2025 as the year where normalcy returns, I can believe that. Raspberry Pi’s CEO, Eben Upton, is crossing his fingers for 2023. He said,

“My hunch, for what it’s worth: we’re already seeing some softening here and there, and I expect a substantial return to normality in 2023.”
